Welcome to Science on the Underground (Science on the Underground logo)

Science on the Underground was launched in March 1998. It involves displays of science-related posters on the London Underground trains. The posters feature concept cartoons, an innovative approach to teaching and learning in science.

Posters will be displayed in each of the 4000 Underground carriages for one month, with a set of four different posters being used each time. They will feature on the carriages during March 1998, August 1998 and March 1999, then every six months if further funding is obtained.

Passengers on the Underground trains are not given the answers to the questions raised by the posters. Instead they can follow up their curiosity through a telephone number (Science Line at +44(0)345 600 444), by obtaining a leaflet from the London Transport Museum or through this web site. The posters displayed during August 1998 are shown on this page.

The purpose of Science on the Underground is to raise the public awareness of science, to stimulate interest in science and to help the public to understand how scientific ideas connect with their everyday lives. It complements the Poems on the Underground project which has been running successfully for several years on London Underground trains.

Science on the Underground is directed by Brenda Keogh
and Stuart Naylor at Manchester Metropolitan University
